HARIANEXPRESS – Authorities in Central Papua province are currently investigating a shooting incident that targeted a convoy operated by mining company PT Freeport Indonesia. The attack occurred on Wednesday around 8:25 a.m. local time near Mile Point 60 in the Tembagapura area, as the 15-vehicle convoy traveled toward Timika. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported from the incident.
Mining Convoy Targeted in Central Papua
The incident involved a convoy consisting of 15 vehicles, specifically 13 buses, a tow truck, and a box truck. This convoy was traveling along a mining road, making its way from Mile Point 68 toward Timika, the capital of Mimika District.
During the journey, gunfire struck three of these vehicles, which included two buses and a tow truck. The shooting happened specifically near Mile Point 60 in the Tembagapura area.
Investigation Launched by Joint Forces
Following the attack, joint personnel from the regional police and the Damai Cartenz security task force promptly conducted a crime-scene investigation. During their examination, they recovered various pieces of evidence near the location, including vehicle glass fragments, metal debris, and three 5.56-millimeter bullet casings.
“The suspected perpetrators are still under investigation,” said Yusuf Sutejo, head of the public information unit for the 2026 Damai Cartenz Operation.
Sutejo further stated that authorities have not yet identified any specific group responsible for the shooting. Law enforcement agencies have secured all collected evidence as their investigation into the motive behind the attack continues.
