HARIANEXPRESS, KALTIM – The East Kalimantan Provincial Government installed an integrated Automatic Identification System (AIS) radar in the waters of Berau on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. This new system aims to strengthen surveillance of ship traffic.
This advanced radar equipment was a grant from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP). It is set to significantly improve the monitoring of vessels entering East Kalimantan’s waters.
East Kalimantan Boosts Maritime Surveillance
Previously, local authorities faced considerable challenges in tracking vessel movements. Many ships failed to report their sailing documents to the relevant authorities, making them difficult to trace.
The integration of radar with AIS now allows for real-time monitoring of ship identity, position, speed, and direction. This system offers a much more effective and comprehensive approach to maritime supervision.
Governor Rudy Mas’ud Emphasizes Importance
Governor of East Kalimantan, Rudy Mas’ud, highlighted the significance of this new aid.
“Pemprov Kaltim mendapat bantuan berupa radar. Alat ini sangat penting untuk mengawasi kapal yang melintas di perairan kita, khususnya di wilayah strategis seperti Berau,”
The governor noted that strengthening this surveillance system is crucial because the coastal area of Berau directly borders international shipping lanes. Furthermore, Berau contains several outer islands susceptible to various violations.
Combating Illegal Activities and Supporting Economic Sectors
The violations include illegal fishing and the operation of vessels without proper permits. The presence of the AIS radar is expected to greatly reduce these illegal practices.
The East Kalimantan Provincial Government hopes this new system will not only enhance water security but also provide significant support to the marine, fisheries, and maritime tourism sectors in the region.
Expediting Operational Readiness
To speed up the operational process, Rudy Mas’ud stated that the local government has coordinated with Bea Cukai (Customs). This coordination is intended to accelerate the administrative procedures for releasing the donated equipment.
This expedited process ensures the radar can be promptly installed and activated for surveillance purposes. Consequently, East Kalimantan’s waters will be better protected from threats and infringements.
