HARIANEXPRESS – The East Kalimantan Provincial Government officially designated Berau Regency as a pilot project for an affordable fish protein program. This initiative, launched on Thursday, July 30, 2026, aims to reduce stunting rates by boosting nutritional intake. The program specifically targets vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children in the region.

Leveraging Berau’s Fishery Potential

Berau Regency was selected for this program due to its significant local fishery potential. The provincial government seeks to utilize this abundance to provide accessible and affordable high-protein food sources for its community.

East Kalimantan Governor Rudy Masud expressed hopes that this initiative will eventually be replicated across other regencies and cities in East Kalimantan. He highlighted the region’s vast marine and inland fishery resources that are currently underutilized for public nutrition.

“Berau kami jadikan pilot project penyediaan protein tinggi melalui pasar ikan murah. Harapannya, program ini nantinya bisa diterapkan di kabupaten dan kota lain di Kalimantan Timur,” Ujar Gubernur Kalimantan Timur Rudy Masud.

The provincial administration, in collaboration with local regency and city governments, plans to guide fishery production. This strategy ensures that fish yield not only generates economic value for fishermen but also contributes to enhancing public health quality.

Fish is recognized as a vital source of animal protein, rich in nutrients essential for child development and effective in mitigating stunting risks. Moreover, the affordability of local fish makes it an ideal nutritious food option for communities.

Promoting Consumption and Ensuring Distribution

To strengthen the program, Governor Rudy Masud urged all local governments to intensify campaigns promoting fish consumption. These efforts should be carried out through various channels, including posyandu (integrated service posts), schools, and community groups.

Furthermore, he emphasized the development of processed fish products by UMKM (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) to add value. Related agencies are tasked with ensuring the efficient distribution of fresh fish to all areas.

This includes remote and coastal regions that have historically faced limited access to nutritious food supplies. Effective distribution is critical to the program’s success in reaching its target demographic.

Broader Government Initiatives for Food Security

Beyond the fisheries sector, the East Kalimantan Provincial Government continues to implement other crucial programs. These include the affordable food movement and market operations in several regions.

Such activities enable residents to acquire various basic necessities at more accessible prices. These efforts collectively aim to improve the overall welfare and health of the community.
