HARIANEXPRESS – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has advised residents of Jakarta to adhere to a set of five protective measures, known as “5M,” in response to volcanic ashfall from Mount Anak Krakatau. These recommendations are to be implemented if volcanic ash begins to impact the affected areas.
The “5M” protocol includes wearing masks or other protective gear when outdoors, ensuring doors and windows are closed, and limiting activities outside the home during periods of heavy ashfall. Additionally, residents are instructed to wet volcanic ash deposits before cleaning them to prevent the fine particles from becoming airborne again.
Governor Anung stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for anyone experiencing respiratory issues or a worsening of vision due to exposure to the volcanic ash. He advised individuals to proceed to the nearest health facility for treatment.
The Jakarta provincial government is actively engaged in ongoing coordination with various central government bodies, including the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the Geological Agency. This collaboration also involves the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
The primary objective of this coordination is to closely monitor the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau and track the movement of volcanic ash. Governor Anung noted that Mount Anak Krakatau currently remains at Level III, or Alert status, and its volcanic ash has been observed spreading to various parts of Indonesia, including the capital city.
The direction of volcanic ash movement is primarily determined by wind conditions. The government continues its efforts to monitor both the ash’s trajectory and the volcano’s activity to inform and implement appropriate response measures.
Governor Anung urged residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves, avoid succumbing to panic, and to carefully evaluate any information circulating about the eruption. He reiterated the importance of seeking prompt medical care if ash exposure leads to respiratory problems or impaired vision.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, prioritize the safety of themselves and their families, and contribute to protecting Jakarta by diligently following the recommended precautions against volcanic ash.
