HARIANEXPRESS – Automaker BYD is gearing up to introduce solid-state battery technology in its electric vehicles starting in 2027. The company plans to kick off the rollout with limited-scale demonstrations prior to expanding toward larger commercial production, as reported by TIMES Indonesia.
Solid-State Battery Demonstration Plans
BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li confirmed that the company intends to start equipping electric vehicles with solid-state batteries next year. This initial 2027 target does not signify mass production, but rather focuses on technology demonstrations and limited trials.
FinDreams Chief Technology Officer Sun Huajun previously noted that BYD could run small-scale trials featuring approximately 1,000 vehicles in 2027. Broader commercial production is targeted around 2030.
High-End Vehicles and Technical Advantages
The initial deployment of solid-state batteries will likely center on premium electric vehicle platforms, such as BYD’s Denza and Yangwang brands. This technology is anticipated to deliver benefits over traditional lithium-ion batteries, including higher energy density, faster charging speeds, and enhanced safety.
Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries that utilize liquid electrolytes, solid-state batteries rely on solid electrolytes. This innovation is regarded as a major potential breakthrough for the next generation of electric vehicles.
Sulfide-Based Technology and Industry Outlook
BYD is currently developing sulfide-based solid-state battery technology and plans field testing outside of laboratory settings in 2027. Despite these developments, the automaker does not anticipate that solid-state batteries will immediately supplant conventional lithium-ion technology.
BYD Chief Scientist Lian Yubo stated that liquid lithium-ion and solid-state batteries may coexist for at least the next two decades while the industry transitions. Furthermore, BYD is involved in China’s All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP), a government-backed project backed by an investment of about US$830 million.
Other major automakers are also exploring this technology. Toyota aims to launch electric vehicles with solid-state batteries around 2027 to 2028, and Samsung SDI has targeted mass production for 2027. For BYD and industry peers, transitioning from limited trials to large-scale commercial production remains the primary hurdle.
