HARIANEXPRESS – A tragic maritime incident recently occurred in the waters of the Java Sea involving the sinking of a passenger ferry. The accident took place amid unfavorable weather conditions and has resulted in six fatalities so far.
Initial reports from relevant authorities indicate that the vessel suffered technical difficulties and lost its balance before sinking. High sea waves and strong winds at the site are believed to have accelerated the sinking process and hindered self-evacuation efforts.
Ongoing Rescue Efforts for Missing Passengers
Official data currently records 130 individuals still missing, making them the primary focus of an intensive search operation. The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) is leading the emergency response by deploying rescue ships, rubber boats, and aerial monitoring support to comb the waters.
“Fokus dan prioritas tertinggi kami saat ini adalah mengoptimalkan seluruh sumber daya armada dan personel untuk memperluas area penyisiran. Meskipun tantangan di lapangan cukup berat dengan arus bawah laut yang kuat serta gelombang yang tak menentu, kami berkomitmen penuh untuk terus berupaya maksimal demi menemukan 130 korban yang masih dinyatakan hilang,” ujar perwakilan resmi Basarnas.
The tragedy highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive evaluation of shipping safety standards in Indonesia. The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) and related agencies are scheduled to launch an in-depth investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.
