HARIANEXPRESS – Extreme heat sweeping across Europe has grown beyond an environmental and health concern. The situation is actively increasing pressure on the region’s economy by disrupting food production, energy supplies, and living costs.

Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), noted that the climate crisis has evolved into an economic security challenge for Europe. Speaking before the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety in Brussels, Stiell pointed to the extreme heatwaves affecting Europe throughout the summer of 2026.

Impact on Food Prices and Labor Productivity

According to Stiell, extreme temperatures have affected infrastructure, business activity, labor productivity, and food production. These disruptions could ultimately push food prices higher and increase pressure on household living costs.

Data from the European Central Bank (ECB) indicated that the 2025 summer heatwave was estimated to increase unprocessed food prices in the euro area by around 0.4 to 0.7 percentage points over a one-year period.

Fossil Fuel Dependence and Energy Transition

Stiell also drew attention to Europe’s dependence on imported fossil fuels. Fluctuations in oil and gas prices have placed additional pressure on households, businesses, and governments.

The situation grows more complicated when climate risks and energy market volatility happen at the same time. The ECB noted that reducing dependence on fossil fuels could help limit inflation volatility and strengthen Europe’s energy resilience.

Stiell urged European countries to accelerate the transition toward clean energy. Reducing dependence on fossil fuels is vital not only for cutting carbon emissions but also for maintaining economic stability and energy security.

The issue has become increasingly relevant as oil, gas, and fuel prices rose amid geopolitical tensions in 2026. The ECB reported that euro area energy inflation increased sharply in early 2026 following a surge in energy commodity prices.
