HARIANEXPRESS – The Jakarta Provoke! 2026 contemporary art exhibition is transforming Menteng Park into an expansive outdoor gallery, featuring 25 artists and curators until July 26, 2026. (24/07/2026)

This iteration of Jakarta Provoke! deviates from previous indoor venues like Pos Bloc, now occupying the prominent site of the former Menteng Stadium in Central Jakarta. The shift outdoors was supported by the Jakarta Culture Office, facilitating a broad public engagement with contemporary art.

Twenty-five artists, each collaborating with a curator of their own selection, have developed site-specific installations for the event. These works specifically aim to reflect Jakarta’s complex social, political, environmental, and cultural realities, turning the park into a sprawling art festival.

The exhibition’s founder, Artpora, established in 2025 by artists Revoluta Syafri and Eko Banding, created Provoke to offer a vital platform for Jakarta-based artists’ creative expression. Following its successful inaugural edition, this year’s event expanded its lineup and fully embraced an outdoor format.

The deliberate choice of Menteng Park, a location steeped in the capital’s sporting history as the former home ground and headquarters of Persija Jakarta, imbues the art with additional layers of significance. This thoughtful engagement with public space serves to echo the site’s enduring place in Jakarta’s collective memory.

Artist Awan Simatupang commented on a key thematic element, stating, “The flower motif, integral to the identity of kembang goyang, carries associations of growth, openness and continual emergence.”

Many of the participating artists are well-established figures whose extensive practices have consistently explored socio-political, economic, and environmental issues. Together, their diverse works seek to capture the intricate daily rhythms, emotional tensions, and layered social interactions that characterize the city.

Visitors began viewing these artworks on July 17, 2026, at Menteng Park, Central Jakarta, marking the exhibition’s public debut. The entire contemporary art showcase is slated to conclude on July 26, 2026, providing a limited timeframe for public interaction.
