HARIANEXPRESS – President Prabowo Subianto has set in motion ambitious plans for extensive railway networks, instructing the development of the Trans-Sumatra Railway and subsequently the Trans-Kalimantan Railway. This directive was given during the inauguration of the first phase of the revitalized Semarang Tawang railway station in Central Java province on Thursday, July 30, 2026. The president’s vision aims to significantly enhance connectivity and foster economic growth across the Indonesian archipelago.
Expanding National Railway Networks
During his address, President Prabowo specifically tasked the Ministry of Transportation and the state-owned railway operator, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), with these monumental projects. The proposed Trans-Sumatra Railway is designed to link Bakauheni in Lampung province at the southern tip of Sumatra with Aceh province in the north.
Following the Sumatra project, or ideally in parallel, the Trans-Kalimantan Railway will commence development. President Prabowo underscored the importance of large-scale thinking for these endeavors.
“After the Trans-Sumatra, there will be the Trans-Kalimantan. If possible, let us start them at the same time. Indonesia is a great, strong and prosperous country. Let us prove it,” Prabowo said.
The President highlighted KAI’s role in expanding its services to reach smaller towns, modernizing its technology, and providing services to low-income communities. He also acknowledged KAI’s efforts in launching the Nusantara Explorer train, which is intended to bolster the tourism sector.
Indonesia currently possesses several operational but disconnected railway networks across Sumatra, while Kalimantan lacks an operational public railway system. The new projects aim to bridge these gaps.
Vision for a Strong and Prosperous Indonesia
President Prabowo expressed his optimism for Indonesia’s future, emphasizing that these infrastructure developments are crucial for the nation’s progress. He stressed the importance of remembering history as a foundation for national development.
These large-scale railway constructions are seen as integral to strengthening connectivity and stimulating economic activity throughout various regions. The President encouraged leaders and officials to embrace a mindset of grand ambition for the nation’s future.
