Malaysia and Indonesia are uniquely positioned to lead this educational transformation. Indonesia’s recent Joint Ministerial Decree, signed by seven ministers, represents an important step in AI regulation across education. While this policy introduces greater restrictions on instant-answer AI in primary and secondary schools, it also emphasizes the need for universities to develop clear operational frameworks for responsible AI adoption.
Similarly, Malaysia, with its aspirations to become a leading regional digital and knowledge economy, should position its higher education sector as a driver of AI literacy. Universities should encourage students to transcend basic AI usage for assignments and instead become creators of AI-driven solutions.
For instance, Islamic economics and finance students in Malaysia could develop specialized AI applications. These applications might be trained on key concepts such as Maqasid al-Sharia, waqf, zakat, and Sharia-compliant investment principles. This fosters innovation, moving beyond viewing AI simply as a shortcut for coursework.
Redesigning Assessments for the AI Era
When assignments primarily reward rote memorization, generative AI can appear as a threat to academic integrity. The actual issue is not the technology itself but the conventional design of assessments. Therefore, universities must rethink how they evaluate student learning.
